Bronzing 101: 1. Tilt your head up and imagine where the sun’s rays would hit your features.
2. Dip your brush in the compact, tap off any excess on the counter, swirl the brush on the back of your hand to smooth it out, then start by sweeping the brush across the top of your hairline.
3. Next fill in your forehead and temples. Go back to reload, tap away excess, swirl a little on the back of your hand, then sweep across your cheekbones and down the bridge of your nose and tap a little on your chin.
4. Go back to reload, tap away excess, swirl a little on the back of your hand, then lift your chin. No, the sun wouldn’t reach your neck, but that’s why you have to go back and make sure to fill it in as well. Otherwise your chest and face will be a different color than your neck!
concealer 101.
TOOLS:
- Cream Concealer Stick — Clea de Peau Concealer is the industry standard for undereye concealing.
- Highlighting Liquid Concealer — I used YSL Touche Eclat, the other industry standard when it comes to undereyes.
- Translucent Powder & Flat Puff – I used Shiseido Translucent Pressed Powder because it’s ultra fine, which is key in the undereye area to set it without getting it cakey.
- Concealer brush.
STEPS:
1. Sweep the brush against the concealer stick to pick up a light layer. It’s really important to build light layers at a time instead of heavy layers that get cakey and eventually crease.
2. Start at your inner corner and apply the concealer along lower lid. Step back and decide if one layer is enough or if you need to add another.
3. Blend it into the skin with your ring finger (the heat of your finger helps with the slip).
4. Dot the highlighter pen just below the area you just concealed.
5. Blend the highlighter into the skin with your finger.
6. Dip the puff or sponge into the pressed powder.
7. Press the puff directly on the areas you concealed and highlighted. Do not drag the puff across the area as that will move the product you applied. Just press press press from the inner corner to the outer corner.
Going Green:
PREP:
1. Primavera Neroli Cassis Protective Lotion — Certified with 70% organic plant ingredients and never tested on animals, I used this amazing smelling lotion to invigorate Emily’s skin.
2. Melvita Nectar de Rose Day Cream — Moroccan Rose repairs skin damage, Iranian Rose Flower Water soothes, Chilean Wild Rose Oil is rich in essential fatty acids to nourish and regenerate the skin. Heaven in a bottle!
FACE:
1. Illuminare Fast Application Pad — This puff was created with an anti-bacterial mesh center and I used it by pressing the foundation into the skin in a stippling motion.
2. Illuminare Concealing Mineral Foundation — Emily actually introduced this product to me last year and I’ve switched a lot of my clients to it since. It gives incredible coverage without looking like you’re wearing a mask.
1. Jane Iredale Amazing Base Loose Mineral Powder — With plankton and seaweed extracts and no oil, talc, FD&C dyes, synthetic preservatives or fragrance, this powder is actually good for your skin. I applied it on Emily with a powder brush.
2. Zuzu Luxe Blush in Sunset — Zuzu is a vegan line that I discovered at Pharmaca that is paraben free and replaces it with a grape seed extract. I applied it directly on the apples of her cheeks with a swirling motion of the brush.
EYES:
1. Winks by Georgie La Starlette Faux Lashes + Lash Glue — The botanically-infused glue is formaldehyde-free but still holds strong all night.
2. Tarte Gifted Amazonian Clay Mascara — This mascara has been a staple in my kit since it first came on the scene because it gives full volume in one coat!
3. Zuzu Liquid Liner in Black Pearl — Not only do I love this liner for its bright intensity but also for its user-friendly applicator tip. Because it is ophthalmologist tested, hypo-allergenic, fragrance free and water resistant, I lined not only Emily’s upper and lower lashlines but also her inner waterlines with it.
4. Tarte Amazonian Clay Cream Shadow in Shimmering Bronze — formulated with Amazonian clay, carnauba wax, mineral pigments, and vitamins A and E and somehow is waterproof too. When the cameras cut to Emily crying during Jodie Foster’s acceptance speech, my heart stopped for a second that her eye makeup would run, but it didn’t budge!
LIPS:
1. Zuzu Luxe Lipstick in Sazerac — This lead-free moisturizing lipstick feels super luxurious on and has just the right amount of shimmer. I love that they blended soothing, clean all natural ingredients, such as spring water, herbs and vitamins as well as rare and exotic essential oils.
2. Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics Lip Tar in Kava Kava — another vegan line that actually outperforms regular lip glosses with its highly-pigmented lead-free formula. Just remember a little goes a long way, so I applied a pinhead-size with a lip brush on top of the lipstick.
There’s a brilliant site called Good Guide that serves as a reference whenever you want to look up a product and see how good or bad it is for you. It even has a 0 – 12 rating system and breaks it down further to health, environment and society factors so look for products that are as high as possible if those are issues that matter to you.
Red Hot Lips:
TOOLS:
1. Your best red lipstick (revisit our guide to finding the perfect red for your skin tone byclicking here) — I used Hourglass Femme Rouge in Icon on Carissa above because it’s one of those incredible reds that somehow looks good on almost every skin tone.
2. Red glitter — I used Cinema Secrets Hollywood Lights Microfine Glitter in Glitz
3. Clear Lip Gloss — I used Elizabeth Arden Crystal Clear Lip Gloss because it’s not too goopy but adds a gorgeous sheen.
4. Lip brush — Any lip brush will work, but don’t even get me started on this NARS Kabuki Lip Brush. It came with their Bento Box Lip Set and is unbeatable for precision when applying lipstick and gloss.
STEPS:
1. Apply a moderate coat of the red lipstick either directly from the tube or with a lip brush.
2. Do not blot but immediately press your finger into the glitter pot to load it up then press it directly all over your lips in a stamping motion.
3. Finish with the clear lip gloss.
foundation shade finder:
1. Step outside into natural but indirect sunlight. If you’re at a department store, ask for a mirror to take outside with you and a couple different shades (grab a yellow-based and a pink-based foundation to see which one disappears more into your skin.
2. Lift your chin slightly and apply a finger stroke as shown above.
3. Follow with a couple more swatches next to each other to really see which one is right for you.
4. Then when you find your perfect shade, please don’t forget to apply it to your neck as well as your face so it all becomes one canvas. And if you’re wearing a low neckline, apply it to your chest too.
Anti Feathering Trick:
TOOLS:
Barrier Pencil — I swear by Make Up For Ever Lip Line Perfector, even on my younger clients that don’t have lip lines so the lipstick doesn’t budge.
Lip Color — I used Yves Saint Laurent Volupte Sheer Candy in Cool Guava because (as most of you already know) I’m obsessed with Glossy Lip Balms. I just can’t have them traveling past my clients’ lips.
STEPS:
Trace just outside the perimeter of your upper and lower lips with the barrier pencil. Press hard as you’re only making one trip around.
Fill in the lip area with your favorite lip color. Use a lip brush for more precision if you’re not comfortable applying directly from the tube.
